Spring 2026 - Numerous projects happening @ Kirk Lake, check out the news below!
KLWA is launching a new lake-wide initiative to improve water quality using biochar.
What is Biochar?
Biochar is a natural, highly porous charcoal that binds phosphorus as water flows through it. Because phosphorus fuels algae growth, reducing it helps improve water clarity and overall lake health. To learn more about biochar and how it works, visit: https://biocharnow.com.
How It Works
Biochar is placed in mesh “socks” and submerged near docks, shoreline runoff areas, or other locations where water enters the lake. As water passes through, the biochar passively captures phosphorus — helping reduce the nutrients that contribute to algae blooms. The socks can remain in place year-round and are effective for up to two years.
This initiative is not about blocking water flow, but about capturing phosphorus entering — or already present in — the lake through passive filtration. Broad participation across the lake will maximize its impact.
How to Participate?
Lakefront homeowners interested in participating can request a biochar sock by completing the short interest form. Together, we can take meaningful steps toward protecting and preserving Kirk Lake’s water quality.
Updated: May 2026
Biochar must come out of lake in Fall of 2027.
Once you remove the biochar from the lake, please let it sit out for a few days to dry.
You can either spread on your lawn or put in trash.
