About Algal Blooms

Algae are a natural part of our lake, and not all algae are harmful. However, harmful algal blooms (HABs) can sometimes look similar to common, non-toxic algae and can be difficult to identify by appearance alone. The examples below from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) can help you recognize some of the signs of a possible HAB and know when it’s best to avoid contact with the water.

If you come across a bloom that looks like a possible harmful algal bloom, please take photos, note the location on the lake, and contact KLWA immediately at (845) 661-6266 so we can arrange to have the water tested.
